Gayness, Multicultural Education and Community

After Reading the Article Written By: Denis Carlson i was in shock. We have come a long way with these issues but we still have alot to accomplish in order to make life easier for these people. We cant discrimate againist these people and we have to accept them because this is something that is happening alot more often. Some quotes that i felt were important in this article were

1. " Throughtout much of this centuary, the dominat idea of community in america was represented by what i will call the normalizing community".

This is so sad but true many believe in the community being normal and that when someone goes out of that norm they are wrong and we quickly discriminate against them because they are going againist what is normal.

2. " popular culture may represet idenity, but idenity also is represented in corporeal form, as individuales actively live...."

This is important because yes culture does show some form of your idenity it also mostly part of how you live your everyday life and what you do to better yourself. If we dont allow people to be themselves then how is this a free country.

3. "Up to one third of all adolescent suicide victiams are gay"

This broke my heart because it shows us how uncomforttable they are about there orentation and how we as a community dont welcome them enough and allow them to do what makes them happy.

Aria By: Richard Rodriguez

After reading the article written by Richard Rodriquez I was actually gald that I had got a chance to read this article. This was one of my favorite articles we have read so far in this class. I liked it because it was from the perspective of a student instead of an educator. I felt this helped me understand the article better. Some quotes i felt were important were:

1. "At last at seven years old, i came to believe what had been technically true since my birth:i was an american citizen".
This quote was shocking i never really understood what it meant to be a real american citizen. There is so many things one has to give up to become an american citizen. coming to america speaking a different lanuage you are put at a disadvantage. It makes it hard with you to cope with the enviorment and makes you feel far from home and makes it hard to cope with.

2. "What I needed to learn in school was that I had the right and obligation to speak the public lanuage"
This quote made me think back to the piece written by Deplit we have to teach the kids the right things to do in school. You have to be so clear that there is no room for confussion. It is very important as teacher for us to make these obligations clear.

3."Without question, it would have pleased me to hear my teachers address me in spanish when I entered the classroom".
This quote was shocking to me because when I walk into a classroom a teacher speaks in a lanuage which i am comfortable with. How it feels to walk into a room with someone speaking a lanuage thats not your first must be so difficult and hard to adapt to. I guess we can say this is part of the white privilage.

White Privilages By: Peggy McIntosh

After reading this article by Peggy McIntosh nothing was shocking to me because we have discussed this is class over the last couple of weeks there were in facts some quotes in the text that stuck out to me and I felt should be labeled important.

1. "I was taught to think that racism could end if white individuales changed their attitude."
I feel this isnt true because white privialge is something that many people dont realize and see everyday. So how can one go about changing somthing if its not fully understood or noticed. Unfortunatly I feel like this is something that is not going to ever end it may get better but will always be a part of society.

2. "Whether I use checks, credit cards, or cash, I can count on my skin color not to work againist the apparence of financial reliabilty".
I found this quote shocking and it left me without knowing what to say. As society we have come up with different sterotypes. Its somthing that affects the life of everyday citizens and doesnt apply to everyone of that race. Yes some people of other races are unstable financial but there are others who are making more then someone in the white class. We have to realize that skin color does not explain anything about a person. Everyone is different regardless of what there backround is.

3. " I can go shopping alone most of the times, pretty well assured that i will not be followed or harassed".
What does a average white person say to this quote, because as much as we dont want to believe it, it is true. I worked in retail for two years and seen it go on my manager watched every color person who walked into the store. If they left without buying anything he would always say they must have stole it. Racism is a crutial topic and we have to stop looking at different groups as people who do wrong and as people who want the same things as us in life. Everyone wants to suceed in life and we have to come together and help each other to do good in life.
